How this calculator works
This works for any flooring sold by the box or carton — ceramic and porcelain tile, laminate, engineered or solid hardwood, and vinyl plank. Coverage per box is printed on the product packaging (usually somewhere between 15 and 25 sq ft for tile, and 20–30 sq ft for plank flooring), so enter the exact figure from the box you're buying rather than a guess.
Why so much waste for diagonal layouts?
A diagonal or herringbone pattern means every edge piece is a cut, and many of those cuts only use part of a tile or plank — 15–20% waste is common versus 10% for a simple straight-lay pattern.
Should I buy exactly what the calculator says?
Round up to the next full box either way, and consider keeping a spare box from the same dye lot/batch for future repairs — tile and flooring color can vary slightly between production runs.
